2- you might try installing Acronis on its own USB stick. 1-disable it under services so it only works when you open it(no auto-backup crap running in the background). That's uncle Dave's adviceĪs for Acronis using system resources, I have 2 ideas to consider(although its never been a problem here). I could also restore from a drive image if I needed to revert to 8.0.5, or even 8.0.3 on Windows XP and be fully running in little over an hour. Right now, I can choose to start with PT9, 10.1.2 or 10.2, simply be swapping system drives(which takes about 5 seconds with the SATA drive cage in my tower). I also use Acronis to clone my system drive to a spare drive, and I keep another system drive with the previous version. Now I run a studio for hire, which means downtime is unacceptable.

Now, no matter what happens, I can restore to: just the OS(if I need to start over), just to Pro Tools(when it was working good) or recover from a complete failure, whether its an update gone sour(it happens), some new software install hoses the system(it happens) or my system drive crashes completely(it happens).

Then I load everything else(3rd party plugins, Addictive Drums, SD2, etc). Then I install Pro Tools, and any updates that are available right then, and test for good performance. When I build a new system, I install and tweak Windows, then save an image. I keep a 2TB USB drive in the cupboard for one purpose only, drive images. Lesson number 2.If it ain't broke, don't fix it! But if you're jonesing to try the latest, refer to lesson 1.įor Windows users, Acronis True Image is one great solution(there are others, but this is what I use). If your rig is working nicely, what a perfect time to save a drive image or clone your system drive to a spare drive. Lesson number 1.BACK IT UP NOW! No Kidding here.
